Yeah, we Raiders fans tolerated the occasional dropped passes in order to witness the promise of a game-winning or game-changing catch by #10. Acrobatic Wide Receiver Seth Roberts was recently released by the Raiders and has signed with the Baltimore Ravens.
For a player who began his NFL career on the practice squad, Seth established himself as a loveable underdog with an occasional winning bite. His knack for bouncing off defenders and/or re-establishing his balance after the catch was what made him a dangerous silver and black weapon. His touchdown to catch ratio in 2016 made him lethal to opponents and helped the Raiders reach a long sought after playoff birth.
In the four seasons he played for the Raiders he had enough clutch moments to keep us fans believing in him. Unfortunately, when opportunity opened the door for him to step up after the Amari Cooper trade last season, Seth didn't take advantage of the moment. Might not have been all his fault. QB Derek Carr was sacked frequently and 2018 Pro Bowl TE Jared Cook became his security target.
Cook, a free agent, signed a 2-year $15.5 million dollar contract with the New Orleans Saints last month, with $8 million fully guaranteed. After his incredible performance last season, he's deserving of every penny. But Cook, unlike Seth, was not a homegrown Raiders product. You tend to cheer a little harder for the player who began his career with your team. There will always be a special place in my heart for those players who's careers were launched wearing Silver & Black.
Thanks for the memories Seth. You gave us some winning moments that are keepers.
