White People Talk White Privilege

I watched this interesting collection of interviews with white people describing what they believe it means to be white in America.  I found it to be an honest and truthful reflection of some white peoples attitudes about the privilege of their whiteness in America.

Its amazing how a society can condition civilized human beings to not see and/or acknowledge their own privileges based on skin color. When brown-skinned people are refused assimilation into a privileged, white-skinned society, it then becomes acceptable and justifiable by some in that society to treat brown-skinned people as under-privileged and therefore less than equal.

At least these interviewees acknowledge their white privilege. But none of them can offer any viable solution to the American racism that white privilege can cause knowingly or unknowingly. Though they mostly seem empathetic, their outlook for seeing any future changes or solutions to American white privilege are all but non-existent.

Unfortunately, societies throughout history have found it necessary to identify a minority group as less than equal and treat them as such. Whether for political, religious, ethnic, economic, or racial gain, the minority group designated undesirable or underprivileged suffers prejudice and ostracism.

When the black minority group’s history in America, along with its distinguishable visual appearance, is viewed and weighed for equal assimilation into American society, it lands partly on blind eyes and confederate hearts; not unlike the hearts of those who fought to keep antebellum slavery alive in the southern states. And judging from the treatment of black Americans since 1865, I’d say the American Civil War ended in a draw.

It appears America is stuck with racism toward blacks until some new minority group arrives on its shores. Perhaps future immigrants from another world with a distinguishable look, making them too targets for hatred, inequality and exclusion. Alien Intelligent Life Forms, Beware America!

Ahmaud Arbery Killers Convicted

On the heels of 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse's acquittal for murdering two people using an AR-15 assault rifle, three men were found guilty for the murder of 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery. I think surprise, followed by agonizing relief, were the emotions of many U.S. citizens after the verdict was announced. Many were hoping to see justice prevail. But historically, justice in Georgia has not been kind to many innocent black people over the years.

The fact that eleven of twelve jurors finding the three white men guilty of killing a black man were also white, made this guilty verdict a landmark decision in Georgia criminal law. What makes this guilty verdict historical is the message it sends to Georgia's gun-toting citizens who choose to take the law into their own hands. It says you will be held accountable for your actions, period. And hidden between the lines of this crucial verdict is an unwritten statement that "black lives matter" and are protected by Georgia laws just as much as white lives. In other words, Georgia has just taken a progressive step forward in improving racial equality in their justice system.

Unfortunately, Ahmaud Arbery had to lose his life in order for Georgia's judicial system to finally gain insight and accept truths about white privilege versus black innocence.  His death opened the door for prosecutor accountability in Georgia.

And this came about only after Georgia's Bureau of Investigations findings, as well as Ahmaud's mother filing a civil lawsuit against Brunswick, Ga. prosecutor Jackie Johnson, for her prejudiced handling of the shooting death of her son and alleged "cover-up:"

Sept. 2, 2021

Even with clear footage of the ambush attack on Ahmaud Arberry, it took transferring the investigation to another Georgia county district attorney, before justice could strap up its boots and begin hunting for the truth.  74 days after telling local police and investigators they killed Ahmaud Arbery in self defense, the three men were arrested.

But Georgia's judicial injustice and racism toward blacks doesn't go down without a fight. Defense lawyers for Arbery's killers showed their racial bias early in the case, during jury selection:

In the end justice was served, as all three men (Greg McMichael, Travis McMichael and William "Roddie" Bryan) are found guilty on murder charges and will face the harsh reality of impartial justice.

Credit Georgia's Cobb County senior assistant district attorney Linda Dunikoski, who's prosecutorial talent was on full display in the nationally televised trial. Ms./Mrs. Dunikoski convincingly disproved defendants' lies and assumptions with cold, hard facts. She tore apart the defense attorney's self-defense plea and tore into defendant Travis McMichael with truths he could only agree with on cross-examination. All this while staying true to her respect for law and the legal process. I think she put on a litigation clinic for both prosecutors and defense attorneys alike. She could and should write a book about what she just accomplished. Outstanding!

Dunikoski won by scoring with a barrage of Slam Dunk facts! She's a Litigating Lebron....

CNN Reports On Rittenhouse Trial

I haven't followed much of the Kyle Rittenhouse trial, but every time I hear the defendant was 17 years old at the time he killed Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber,  I wonder where the heck were the adults he was rolling with that night, if any.

How could a 17 year old walk around an American town, freely brandishing a semi-automatic assault rifle in the midst of a hostile protest, and NOT kill somebody. Have any adults stepped forward to take some of the blame for influencing and/or lack of supervision? There must have been gun-toting organizations, supposedly there to help patrol the streets of Kenosha, with responsibly acting adults keeping gun-toters in line. Or is this really a case of one teenage boy acting on his own without any outside influence or engagement.

Didn't representatives for the conservative website "The Daily Caller," who interviewed Rittenhouse before the shooting, notice anything unusual about the age and/or demeanor of the youth? Did they think to contact local authorities to disarm the teen? Did they warn him of the harm he might incite or harm that might come to him while brandishing an assault weapon?

I just find it irresponsible of anyone out that night, especially those armed and proclaiming to protect and serve the community, knowingly allowing a teenager to participate in militia-style activities or roam around independently with an assault weapon. And if laws, governing teenagers armed with assault weapons, excuse them from accountability because they lack the intelligence, experience or common sense NOT to bring assault weapons to a heated protest, then United States of America laws should be on trial for murder; along with weapons makers and gun associations.

From what I've surmised, a young man was influenced or coerced to engage in activity he lacked maturity, training, judgement and legal age to participate in. Two people lost their lives during an evening of violence when protestors clashed with an underage, unsupervised armed and dangerous American man-child. Now on trial for murder, the man-child reverts back to being just a scared boy, awakening from a nightmare, unable to grasp the full extent of his actions. And, like most children who feel they did nothing wrong, unapologetic.

In California, if a person ignites a fire, knowingly or unknowingly, in an area or environment at high-risk for wildfires, that person is held accountable if caught. Wildfires put lives and property at risk. I suppose we can say the same for assault weapons in the wrong hands. As well as lies and misinformation spread by influential persons with access to a wide range of citizens via media and/or public office (Ex.: Jan 6, 2021 United States Capitol Attack).

Assistant District Attorney Thomas Binger holds Kyle Rittenhouse's gun as he gives the state's closing argument on Monday, November 15.
Binger's closing argument began by noting the trial was not about politics, or looting or rioting -- but instead about how life is more important than property.
"I think we can also agree that we should not have 17-year-olds running around our streets with AR-15s, because this is exactly what happens," he said.
The prosecutor challenged Rittenhouse's motivation for coming into Kenosha that night during the chaotic aftermath of the police shooting of Jacob Blake. He pointed out Rittenhouse traveled across state lines, violated a curfew and was not protecting his family or property. He also spent the night lying about being an EMT, Binger said.
Using several videos, Binger walked through the course of events that night, from Rittenhouse's decision to go downtown, to the shooting of Rosenbaum, to the second set of shootings while he tried to flee. Jurors were paying close attention to the series of videos and images, according to a pool reporter in court.
Binger argued Rittenhouse provoked Rosenbaum by pointing a weapon at him before the man chased him. The prosecutor dismissed Rittenhouse's "cockamamie theory" that Rosenbaum -- who did not have anything in his hands when he was shot -- was going to take the teenager's gun and kill other people.
"They have to convince you that Joseph Rosenbaum was going to take that gun and use it on the defendant because they know you can't claim self-defense against an unarmed man like this," he said. "You lose the right to self-defense when you're the one who brought the gun, when you're the one creating the danger, when you're the one provoking other people."
A series of witnesses testified during the trial Rosenbaum had acted erratically and earlier threatened Rittenhouse. But the prosecutor noted there was no video of any threat and questioned whether it really happened. Instead, Binger described the 5-foot-4-inch Rosenbaum as "a little dog" who was all bark and no bite.
In the second shooting incident, the crowd of people confronted Rittenhouse because they reasonably believed he was an active shooter, Binger said.
"That crowd was right. That crowd was full of heroes. That crowd did something that honestly, I'm not sure I would have had the courage to do," he said.
Rittenhouse, meanwhile, acted recklessly by loading his weapon with full metal jacket ammo capable of piercing armor and having little understanding of the weapon or the consequences of his actions, Binger argued.
"On the witness stand, he broke down crying about himself, not about anybody that he hurt that night," he said. "No remorse, no concern for anyone else."

Golden State Warriors 10-1

Though most of their early season opponents are now sporting losing records, I still give the Warriors an A+ on how they've come outta the gate. It's not only they're winning games, but how they're doing it, with starters Andrew Wiggins and Jordan Poole knocking down shots; young bench players stepping up their game; a return to exciting, ball-movement offense and more. Strength In Numbers once again!

Meanwhile, the defense is stellar, with Kevon Looney grabbing 17 rebounds last night, and Gary "da glove 2" Payton III locking down and disrupting opponents' offensive flow. The Show is "Back in the Bay." And just wait till 5-time NBA all-star Klay Thompson returns to join Steph Curry and Company! It's gonna be a Show Stopper Fo' Sho'!
