Yesterday I was reminded of a football play from fifty years ago still painful for Raider Nation to watch. This morning I awake to news of the passing of the player who scored on that play, Franco Harris. Although I wear the "Silver & Black" colors of the team caught on the losing end of that game, I have nothing but respect and admiration for our "Black & Gold" competitors from that day.
The 1972 playoff game was a hard-fought defensive struggle reflecting both teams' style of play before and after that day. Every meeting since between the two teams has been a knock'em, sock'em slugfest. We wouldn't want it any other way.
Franco Harris and the Pittsburgh Steelers have been as much a part of Raiders history as the play dubbed "The NFL's Greatest Play" of all-time. It is with heavy hearts that the football world will re-live the greatest NFL play as they honor the memory of that infamous game this Sunday.
The NFL had previously scheduled to honor "the play" at half-time of Sunday's Raiders-Steelers game. With the unexpected passing of Franco this week, I'm sure the man who finished the play will receive a special tribute from Pittsburgh. Steelers fans wouldn't want it any other way.
