Last weekend Boxing saw Gervonta "Tank" Davis return to the ring after a 14-month absence and take down Frank Martin with a left uppercut, left cross combination in the 8th round. Martin fought a good fight, bruising up Tank through seven rounds. But Tank played the long-game and wore Martin down with pressure, power, and patience. And as one announcer put it, when Tank smells blood in the water, he attacks like a shark. Relentless!
What I see in Tank Davis is a quality carried into the ring by all great champions. Perseverance!
Perseverance: continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition: the action or condition or an instance of persevering: STEADFASTNESS.
Tank Davis is that boxing "energizer bunny," beating the drum mightily while coming hard at opponents. And he just keeps going, and going, and going . . .
If the young man can stay on course and continue to prove himself worthy of past greats, I see nothing but legendary success in his future. I am a Tank Davis fan. I predict he will rewrite the ESPN Pound-for-Pound Ranking system before all is said and done.
Go Get'em Tank!
