The Sharky's Incredible Five Minutes

Tonight the San Jose Sharks etched themselves into the NHL history books after coming back from a 3-0 deficit against the Vegas Golden Knights in the 3rd quarter of a game seven playoff. I just can't believe it and neither can the Knights, who looked on in disbelief as the Sharks scored four goals in five minutes to take the lead, then winning it with a goal in overtime.

Wow, the best thing that can happen to the San Jose team and city has just happened. The Sharks found a way to move on in the NHL Playoffs. But it's the HOW that makes their accomplishment so magical. Maybe they are a team of destiny.

Here's a quick review:

Sharks win game 1, then go on to lose in ugly fashion games 2,3 & 4. On the verge of elimination they pull out a double-overtime win in game 6 to force tonight's game 7. And the rest, as they say, is History!

Again, it's the HOW they did it that makes this first round series win so spectacular. I, not being a big Hockey fan, checked into the game to see they were down 2-0 in the beginning of the third quarter. I turned to the local news. During the sports segment of the news the sportscaster reporting on the game-in-progress all but put a cap on the Sharks season, reminding us of their familiar season long problem of allowing opponents to score early and often. By the time he ended his cast the Knights had added another score to make it 3-0 . The sportscaster's tone and body language said it all; better luck next season Sharks.

Trying to forget the inevitable loss, I tuned into some other network programming and almost forgot about the game. Later, forcing myself to take a peek at the final score on my cell, I saw the ESPN caption, "5-4 Sharks Win in OT" and thought it was fake news.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. I saw the highlights, incredible. The San Jose Palladium or whatever its called these days, was rocking like Oracle on a Warriors night with Lebron in town. If we could bottle the passion and emotion of each and every Sharks player as the winning overtime shot crossed into the goal, we'd have the secret elixir for everlasting life. I gotta go back and checkout more of the highlights. Every Sharks goal in regulation, again four in five minutes, looked as if it had the hand of God guiding it ever so immaculately into the net. And the winning overtime goal was just a sweet, reaching, hook around sweep that the Knight's goalie seemed to concede as if he knew the Sharks were in an unbeatable zone.

Congratulations San Jose Sharks on an IMMACULATE Game 7 Win!

Harlem Rens Basketball

The Harlem Rens

Who were they? When did they play? Were they really that good? All these questions and more were answered once I watched the Kareem Adbul-Jabbar produced documentary film, "On The Shoulders of Giants" (2011).

I knew about the Harlem Globetrotters basketball organization, who actually were based in Chicago. I'd seen a traveling team out of New York City called the Harlem Diplomats when I was a kid. But I'd never heard of The Rens or the once popular Renaissance Hotel in Harlem, NY where they played games.

NBA Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, a New York native, does an excellent job talking with former Rens players and opening a window for us to peek through to a past era of sports and segregation. Also included are interviews with Charles Barkley, Carmelo Anthony, Chuck D, Maya Angelou , Bob Costas, etc...

Like the research Kareem did for his book about the black WWII 761st Tank Battalion (Brothers in Arms), he shows how black men found a way to demonstrate their extraordinary abilities in spite of the white racist social structure of America at that time.

Though the documentary addresses segregation and racism, that wasn't its main focus. The highlight was the accomplishments of a basketball organization and its players. I learned about a basketball team whose style of play was a forerunner to the NBA style we see with today's Golden State Warriors. The Rens were a fast paced passing team with players who trusted each other and knew how to dominate in their system.

The documentary reveals the rivalry that took place between the Rens and Harlem Globetrotters. To think that the Globetrotters weren't from Harlem and only used the Black Mecca name to identify with black culture and sell tickets to white audiences, is a shock. Some, including the owner of the Rens, looked upon the Globetrotters as a clown act; a shuffling, jiving minstrel show that appealed to white audiences who were comfortable with the clowning "stepin fetchit" black stereotypes. He later learned the Globetrotters were more than just circus entertainment, they could play basketball.

I borrowed a copy of the documentary from my local library and encourage sports fans to check with their local libraries to see if it's available there. Watching it was a lesson in basketball and American history that I'm so glad to have discovered. Better late than never.

Keep on doing your thing Kareem, projecting light on American black history that illuminates the accomplishments of a segregated citizenry. You have proven to be a champion in the eyes of us who have benefited from watching your moves both on the court and off.  Jazâ-ka-Llâh (“May God reward thee”)

Remembering Basketball's First All-Black Team

New York Renaissance

Globetrotter's weren't first B-ballers from Harlem

The New York Renaissance, also known as the Harlem Renaissance Big Five or the Rens, was an all-Black professional basketball team founded in 1923 by Robert “Bob” Douglas, a few years before the Harlem Globetrotters.
The team played its first game on Nov. 3, 1923. The Rens got their name from the team’s playing venue – the Renaissance Casino ballroom in Harlem, N.Y. – where they dazzled fans with their innovative style of play. The Rens added grace and style to the game of American basketball.

The Rens were one of the few all-Black, traveling professional basketball teams of that era. Formed five-years before those most famous Globetrotters, the Rens provided African-American men with the opportunity to compete against White athletes on an equal footing.

The team played most of its games on the road, barnstorming across the country out of necessity because they were unable to join any professional leagues due to racial discrimination.

The Harlem Renaissance Big Five was one of the most successful all-Black professional basketball teams in the 1920s and 1930s. During the 1932-33 regular season, the Rens compiled a record of 112-8 and also won 88 consecutive games, a mark that has never been matched by a professional basketball team.

A high point was their 34-25 victory over the NBL champions Oshkosh All-Stars in 1939, in the World Basketball Tournament in Chicago, making the Rens the first all-Black team to win a championship game.

The team compiled a 2,588-539 record over its history.

They were disbanded in 1949 and inducted in the Basketball Hall of Fame as a team in 1963.

The original Rens included Leon Monde, Hy Monte, Zack Anderson, Clarence “Fats” Jenkins and Frank Forbes. James “Pappy” Ricks, Hilton Slocum, Harold Mayers, Walter Saunders, George Fial and Eyre “Bruiser” Saitch were not founding players, but were among the early players to lace ’em up for a team that history seems to have overlooked.

Screwed By The Schedule; Again!

The Oakland Raiders will go six straight weeks this season without a home game in Oaktown. One of those week will be a Bye Week and another played in London. So what else is new with the NFL and it's treatment of the silver & black; they've never accommodated bad guy images and it's a wonder that they ever allowed the eye-patched pirate logo onto the silver helmet.

Maybe the boisterous Raiders of past years along with the late great leader Al Davis brought it upon themselves. Al was a renegade who made more enemies than friends and right or wrong, he never apologized.

I wonder if Las Vegas knows what they're getting themselves into. No Love, No Fairness, No Favors. Just the same'ol league conspiracy, let's screw the Raiders because we can attitude. It's okay, let'em continue placing obstacles and traps to lower the odds of our success. We will continue to knock down walls and force our way into the conversation of winning football. And I pity the fool who tries standing in our way this coming season. It's Our Year...….

If you ask me, if we beat the teams in our division we need not worry so much about the others on our schedule. Based on last season they're all beatable. Our preseason opponents carry more of a threat than the regular season teams. I like our free agent pickups and looking forward to seeing a more productive team overall. Can't wait to see Antonio Brown scoring touchdowns. This traveling schedule could bring the team together, forcing a much needed focus and execute style of play. Like other traps the league has tried laying in our path, if the heavy travel schedule doesn't kill us it'll make us stronger; I guarantee it!

Just Win Baby!

Virginia is your 2019 National Basketball Champion

What a game. Two teams fighting for all the marbles. In a style that resembled below the rim 1960's pass and shoot basketball, the Virginia Cavaliers found a way to put the Texas Tech Red Raiders to bed in overtime.

It might not have been a championship game many wanted to see, but it turned out to be a game you wouldn't want to have missed. Just the heart and stick-to-it-ness of both teams gave us a lesson in competitive team sports. The one play at a time philosophy is definitely alive and well in college basketball. Two well coached, disciplined teams. That's what American college sports is supposed to look like; youth playing for the love of the game.

Thank you TTU and UVA for an extraordinary and entertaining basketball championship game. And the refs let them play ball.

Finally, the team I've been rooting for year after year in honor of my late father, a native Virginian, has sealed the deal.

Congratulations University of Virginia. You Are NCAA Basketball Champions!

Wendell Phillips Speech - "Toussaint L'Ouverture"

This statue of François-Dominique Toussaint, better known as Toussaint Louverture, was donated to the city of Bordeaux by the Republic of Haiti in 2005. The subject matter of this work, sculpted by Haitian artist Ludovic Booz, and its riverside location are heavy with significance, forming an important step on the road to Bordeaux coming to terms with its slave trade past.    INVISIBLEBORDEAUX

I post this historic information as part of my required reading on Haiti. In learning about the Haitian leader Toussaint L'Ouverture, I came across an 1861 oratory presentation comparing greatness of this black general to that of white counterparts the likes of Napoleon, Cromwell and Washington.

I first came across Toussaint in a book written by John D. Vandercook titled "Black Majesty." Though the book features the revolutionary exploits of one of Toussaint's generals (Henri Christophe), it could not have been written without Toussaint himself being the architect and catalyst for what would become one of the few successful slave rebellions in documented history. Toussaint's skills as both military leader and economic and social reformer were amazing given the place, time and peoples. He was recognized for his intelligence and integrity prior to even leading the Haitian revolution, and later by historians studying the revolutionary period.

From website: AP English Lang & Comp

In 1861 near the beginning of the Civil War, Wendell Phillips—a white abolitionist—delivered a speech in which he glorified the achievements of a Haitian general named Toussaint-Louverture. During this time, the Northerners—which were Phillips’ audience—debated whether or not African Americans should be given the opportunity to serve in the military. For the purpose of gaining support to allow African Americans to be in the military, Phillips used Toussaint-Louverture and his accomplishments as a means to imply that African Americans have the ability—like Toussaint-Louverture—to be superior to whites during a war. He even compares Toussaint-Louverture to legendary figures such as Napoleon and Washington, claiming that Toussaint was far more exceptional as a leader. Considering the audience of this speech were pro-abolition, they would most likely admire Toussaint-Louverture as an effective leader and would support Philips’ viewpoint on allowing African Americans to serve in the military.
Phillips uses many strategies in his speech to draw in support for his purpose. The most effective strategy would be Phillips’ use of comparison between Toussaint-Louverture and other historical leaders. In the beginning of the speech, Phillips gives us an idea that a story of a leader can best be told by his or her people. For example he says, “If I stood here tonight to tell the story of Napoleon, I should take it from the lips of Frenchmen…Were I here to tell you the story of Washington, I should take it from you” (1-5). From these examples, he shifts to the biography of Toussaint-Louverture, where he states that this leader’s story was built reluctantly from the testimonies of Toussaint’s enemies. The fact that his own enemies were one of the sources of the accounts of his achievements gives us a notion that Toussaint was a very powerful leader compared to Washington and Napoleon; considering these leaders’ anecdotes weren’t given by their rivals. This significant distinction heightens the importance of Toussaint-Louverture and his achievements for the audience.
Phillips doesn’t stop the comparison here though. He continues up to an extent where he begins to point out the flaws of historical leaders such as Washington, and uses that as leverage to establish Toussaint-Louverture as more superior. In his speech he says, “I would call him Washington, but the great Virginian held slaves. [The author then gives us an example of Toussaint’s feat in the following sentence]. This man risked his empire rather than permit the slave-trade in the humblest village of his dominions.” (28-33). Realizing that their own country’s father has more flaws compared to an obscure African American general creates both a sense of shame in the audience and respect for Toussaint. This in turn creates a higher consideration for allowing African Americans to serve in the military.
Below is a link to the speech:
ending paragraph of speech:
You think me the fanatic, for you read history, not with your eyes but with your prejudices. But fifty years hence, when Truth gets a hearing, the Muse of history will put Phocion for the Greek, Brutus for the Roman, Hampden for England, Fayette for France, choose Washington as the bright consummate flower of our earlier civilization, then, dipping her pen in the sunlight, will write in the clear blue, above them all, the name of the soldier, the statesman, the martyr, TOUSSAINT L'OUVERTURE.

Univ. of Virginia and a guy named Guy

The Virginia Cavaliers basketball squad, with sharpshooting from a guy named Kyle Guy, miraculously got past the inspiring play of the Auburn Tigers to earn their first ever NCAA Men's Championship Game appearance. Finally Virginia, you're in it. Now let's see if you can win it.

Some might say that Auburn had the game and simply let it slip through their fingers. Others are pointing fingers at a controversial foul call that sent "The Guy" to the foul line where he sank three consecutive shots to put the Cavaliers up 63-62 with 0.06 seconds left in the game.

What I saw was a tough, never retreat-never surrender, Virginia squad staying composed and confident while executing the game plan. Though Auburn seemed to have the better athletes, Virginia showed a mental toughness that refused to be intimidated. It was a great Final Four game. It's a shame that someone had to lose.

Hold your heads up Auburn (not you Charles Barkley). The former NBA player/Auburn Alum, who loves to hate on my Golden State Warriors, was seen courtside nervously pacing during the final minutes of the game. You get nothing Charles, you lose, Good Day Sir!

Congratulations University of Virginia Cavaliers.

WR Seth Roberts - Always a Raider!

Yeah, we Raiders fans tolerated the occasional dropped passes in order to witness the promise of a game-winning or game-changing catch by #10. Acrobatic Wide Receiver Seth Roberts was recently released by the Raiders and has signed with the Baltimore Ravens.

For a player who began his NFL career on the practice squad, Seth established himself as a loveable underdog with an occasional winning bite. His knack for bouncing off defenders and/or re-establishing his balance after the catch was what made him a dangerous silver and black weapon. His touchdown to catch ratio in 2016 made him lethal to opponents and helped the Raiders reach a long sought after playoff birth.

In the four seasons he played for the Raiders he had enough clutch moments to keep us fans believing in him. Unfortunately, when opportunity opened the door for him to step up after the Amari Cooper trade last season, Seth didn't take advantage of the moment. Might not have been all his fault. QB Derek Carr was sacked frequently and 2018 Pro Bowl TE Jared Cook became his security target.

Cook, a free agent, signed a 2-year $15.5 million dollar contract with the New Orleans Saints last month, with $8 million fully guaranteed. After his incredible performance last season, he's deserving of every penny. But Cook, unlike Seth, was not a homegrown Raiders product. You tend to cheer a little harder for the player who began his career with your team. There will always be a special place in my heart for those players who's careers were launched wearing Silver & Black.

Thanks for the memories Seth. You gave us some winning moments that are keepers.

Steph Curry Pass - RIDICULOUS!

From the looks of Curry's teammates (lack of excitement) we can safely surmise that they see him make passes like this in practice all the time. Just another day of playing with a phenomenal basketball player.

The all-star Warriors guard scored 40pts against the Lakers and appears to already be in playoff mode. One of the best shooter/passers in the league has just addressed his vision issues with corrective contact lenses. That's like Michael Jordan finally correcting an ankle problem that had hampered his hang-time. When asked how the contact lenses have helped, Curry said it improved his visual depth and everything  just looks "Crystal Clear."

Look out NBA, the Curry led Golden State Warriors have their eyes on the prize once again. And this time the vision is "Crystal Clear!"

FDA Updates That Matter - Food Recalls

Amazing! That's what I find myself saying when it comes to discovering information online that could impact my health and/or save my life. Who knew that the USDA has a food department that works with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) called the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). The two departments work together to keep our food as safe as regulations require.

Trying to decipher which agency is responsible for what might require a course in government regulations policy. For example: Sausage meat is inspected by the FSIS, while sausage casings that enclose the meat are the FDA's responsibility, because they have no nutritional value as meat. To learn more about this food sharing responsibility here's a link breaking down some of the complex setup in layman's terms:

https://www.foodsafetynews.com/2010/12/who-inspects-what-a-food-safety-scramble/

The actual reason I'm posting about food safety though is not to scare folks into a plant-based diet, (which I'm proud to  safely subscribe to) but to inform the public that there's a website available alerting us to current and past recalls. And if the saying "You are what you eat" carries any weight in your food choices, then you'll wanna copy this link to your browser favorites. Here's the link:
FSIS
https://www.fsis.usda.gov/wps/portal/fsis/topics/recalls-and-public-health-alerts/current-recalls-and-alerts

Following is the link to the FDA recall list. And in case you didn't know, Not All Food Recalls Have Press Releases or Public Notices. Think about that for a minute..... Why Not?:
FDA
https://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/default.htm

Below I've copied from the the FSIS recall activity listing the past 30 days. In that time there have been 18 recalls. What's the chance that one of the recall products can be found in your refrigerator/freezer? For us non-meat eaters who might indulge every now and then on a shameful processed-food snack for old times sake, there's one product on the list that might be found on our shelf; Pork Skins...….Sorry meat eaters, beef-chicken-pork make up the remainder of the list. Turkey appears only once. Pescatarians eat your heart out!
