Saluting Stephen A. Smith

Stephen A, Smith on relationships, mentoring, creativity, legacy

I am giving accolades to Stephen A. Smith today. Not so much for his show, or above episode's rehashing of his relationship with Skip Bayless. But for his loyalty to friends and his unselfish desire to help others get ahead, either in the media/film business or just in life.

Two weeks ago, Stephen A's former sports talk partner Skip parted ways with the FS1 show 'Undisputed.' Since the announcement there's been talk surrounding the breakup, as well as speculation which brought Stephen A.'s name into the conversation. Stephen A. stepped up and responded admirably to all the talk. Not only did he give credit to Skip in helping his sports talk career transition from radio to television, but he set the record straight on where his career has been and where he sees it going.

More importantly, Stephen A. let viewers know his future goals for discovering and developing new talent and content, and other endeavors. He wants to help viewers succeed in their ambitions. He wants to leave a legacy of building and creating, in the likes of other gifted and creative talents who he names. In other words, he wants to pioneer a path to success for those dreamers and hopefuls fantasizing about a shot at career success. And he's doing it by example.

Stephen A. Smith, to many just another loudmouth New Yorker, is showing his true colors by wanting to "give back" to folks the teachings and opportunities that were given to him when he first started out. Some might call it "paying it forward," or "not forgetting where you came from." Either way, the man is giving an example of what good community, good support, good choices, positive outlook, perseverance, and "not forgetting where you come from" can accomplish in life.

When the desire for success becomes bigger than individual need, and a long-term strategy is implemented over short-term gratification, there is where one individual can inspire others and move mountains.
